Good morning! It’s Dani Bergstrom, policy editor here.

I barely just turned in my ballot last night. I’ve spent so much time preparing for the election (I hope you checked out our voter guide!) that I almost forgot to do my own research on everything else.

If you haven’t dropped your ballot off yet, you have until 8 p.m. to drop off your ballot at the nearest dropbox or check into your neighborhood vote center. Find your nearest location here.

I’m old enough to remember when Election Night was a big deal. But with mail-in voting becoming more common – and universal, across California – we have to exercise a little more patience. Winners are less frequently declared on Election Night, as election officials still have yet to count ballots that were postmarked earlier that day.

When I asked James Kus, the Fresno County Registrar of Voters, about our local ballot counting process, he said that it takes local election workers around five working days to count all mail-in ballots after election day. They’ll post some early results tonight, after polls close – and then usually another update of results later this evening. But we won’t hear from them again until Friday. They have a few weeks to finalize counting – and making sure signatures are valid – before they certify the election results.

At Fresnoland, we’ll share updates on the local races we’re following on our website. Be sure to check fresnoland.org later tonight (or tomorrow, if you’re not a nerd) for the latest results.
