The Hoover High seat on Fresno Unified’s school board may be the only one the teachers union managed to flip, despite targeting two incumbents in this cycle.
In what remains one of the closest races on the ballot in Fresno, the contest to represent Fresno Unified’s Hoover High region remains undecided a week-and-a-half after Election Day.
Dan Bordona, a political newcomer with teachers-union backing, has led incumbent Claudia Cázares by a small margin since election night.
That was still the case after the most recent ballot dump late Friday night – but the gap closed slightly.
Bordona now leads by a margin of just 176 votes, down from the 197 votes that separated him from Cázares after Tuesday’s tally.
That equates to 50.59% of the vote for Bordona, to Cázares’ 49.24%.
Despite the thin margin, Bordona said he was feeling fairly confident about the latest results Friday night.
“There’s so few votes left to be counted, I think that lead of 176 is looking pretty good,” he said.
With just over 13,000 votes left to count, Hoover residents likely won’t have an answer on who their representative is on the district’s seven-member board until early next week.
The next tally is expected Monday, according to the Fresno County Clerk’s Office.
“I think I still would rather wait till Monday to declare victory,” Bordona said, “but I’m feeling pretty good right now.”
He added that he’s eager for definitive results so he can move onto “starting to do the work.”
Cázares didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment on the latest results Friday evening.
