Fresno Police Chief Mindy Casto issued a public apology to council candidate Naindeep Singh in a news conference late Tuesday after a report confirmed there were no drugs in his system after he was arrested over the weekend on suspicion of a DUI.

Casto said she received โ€œverbal advisementโ€ from the laboratory on Tuesday conducting the test that Singhโ€™s results were negative.

The chief said sheโ€™d called Singh shortly before Tuesdayโ€™s news conference to apologize to him personally.

The apology comes after Singh was arrested late Saturday on suspicion of driving under the influence of a drug. The chief had held a news conference earlier on Tuesday before the results came back in which she emphasized that her officer had done the right thing arresting Singh after he had failed โ€œsix of the eight indicator testsโ€ of sobriety.

Singh held a news conference Monday night where he shared the results of an independent toxicology report heโ€™d requested the night of his arrest, showing no drugs in his system, and said he expected to be exonerated by PDโ€™s own report.

The District 1 candidate, who is also a Central Unified board member and the executive director of the nonprofit Jakara Movement, is holding his own news conference later Tuesday to address the update from the Fresno police chief.
