☀️ Good morning! Today is Wednesday, June 5. Danielle, here. Today kicks off our first heat wave of the year, with temperatures expected to get as high as 109 degrees today through Friday. Fresnoland’s Diego Vargas has compiled some essential tips for how to stay cool over the next days.
🥵 We’ve been lucky enough this year to have a slower start to summer, with today being the first time we’ll see triple-digits. Fresno, like much of the world, has been experiencing a warming trend, with the number of triple-digit heat days steadily increasing since records began in 1948. 2021 was a peak year, with a record-breaking 69 days at or above 100 degrees.
Forecasters are predicting yet another hotter-than-average summer out here in California – we’ll see if that materializes.
💦 In the meantime, I plan to cool off over the next days by hitting up the Island Water Park with my kids after they’re out of school. It’s at the top of their summer bucket list.
🏛️ Budget hearings have been going on all week at Fresno City Hall. Today’s a big day – we’ll hear budget presentations from the police, fire, parks, personnel, public utilities, and convention center departments.
Last week, Fresnoland’s Omar Shaikh Rashad summarized some of the winners and losers of Mayor Dyer’s proposed budget – with the police department once again being one of the few winners, increasing their budget over $26.5 million than what was approved last year. (They have since made budget modifications over the last year to increase spending over what was originally approved.)
