Cherry farmers got burned: You might remember last summer was crazy hot even by Fresno standards. Well, that old heatwave is still messing with us. Cherry growers are frustrated; crop sizes are down by as much as half in some statewide estimates. The Fresno Bee | The Business Journal
Still no answer: As California Gov. Gavin Newsom tries to get tough on unhoused citizens ahead of his likely presidential campaign, some local leaders told ABC30 that anti-camping laws are helping the business and homeowners as intended, but advocates continue to sound the alarm as many cities and counties try to arrest their way out of the issue. It’s a conflict that Fresnoland has been following since the beginning nearly a year ago — and still no elected leader has ever answered the question: “Where the hell are people supposed to go?”
A long road ahead (and it’s full of potholes and politics): Fresno’s messy, disjointed efforts to shore up critical road maintenance funding under Measure C continues with a community workshop later this month with the Fresno Council of Governments. The May 27 workshop “ will gather public feedback on how future transportation sales tax revenues should be spent.” The Fresno Business Journal
Police lawsuits: “A trio of federal lawsuits alleges several Fresno police officers engaged in a pattern of civil rights violations. In all three cases, police have denied the allegations and requested a trial date.” KVPR
ICE reports: The Fresno County Sheriff’s Office is expected to release its annual report on ICE access to county jail inmates over the last year. After the Fresno County Sheriff’s Office provides the statistical report, the Board of Supervisors will receive public comment. The presentation is set for May 20 during the regular meeting of the Board of Supervisors.
