No county workers were harmed, and the election site was fully secure before the evacuation was completed.
The Fresno County Elections Office underwent an emergency evacuation on Thursday due to “a hazardous materials situation,” caused by a neighboring county operation, according to a news release.
The elections warehouse on 4525 E Hamilton Ave was evacuated after a power-supply device close to the site “was found to be smoking and potentially releasing harmful gases,” the release said. The city’s fire department responded to a call to the elections office at 9:52 a.m., according to Joshua Sellers, the spokesperson for the city’s fire department.
Sellers said that the fire department encountered “light smoke” on the second floor of the building in a room containing electronic equipment.
No county workers were harmed, and the election site was fully secure before the evacuation was completed, according to the news release.
Elections workers were expected back at the warehouse for regular work hours on Friday.
Fresno voters were expecting to get another voter results update on Thursday, but the county issued a temporary evacuation for the rest of the day. The next expected vote results update is expected to come on Friday at 10 a.m.
