How can I apply?

Fill out the application below by Sunday, April 7.

Are you someone who really cares about, and wants to get involved in Fresno? Do you know of great stories, inspiring organizations or underreported issues in your community? Would you like to gain skills that allow you to better understand and respond to community needs through journalism and storytelling? This fellowship is for you!

The Fresno Community Journalism Fellowship is a paid, learn-and-produce series aimed at supporting community members to produce local stories and information that can help their neighborhoods thrive. The program will focus on providing journalism skills as a means of getting more civically engaged and supporting more informed communities across the city.

You’ll learn tools for producing compelling content that’s relevant to your community, understand how decisions get made, and how to see the larger systems at play behind the issues you care about. You’ll also be paired with a mentor and supported to produce a story on your medium of choice at the end of the program. Additionally, you will be connected to local organizations and opportunities where you can apply your learnings and get involved in community news.

This six-part workshop series will start the last week of May 2024 and run throughout the summer. Dates will be scheduled around the fellows availability and the workshops will run for roughly two hours and be a hybrid of remote (Zoom calls) and in-person sessions at Fresno City College, which is centrally located and accessible from multiple bus routes.

Fellows will be supported with a stipend of $600 to support their access to, and participation in, the program. You will receive half of the stipend at the start and the other half upon completion of attendance at least 5 out of the 6 sessions.

Through this fellowship, you will:

  • Produce a piece of community journalism with local media partners
  • Get paired with a local media mentor
  • Be connected with opportunities to expand and apply your skills, including opportunities to: freelance with Fresnoland and other local media; become a paid Documenter with Fresnoland; and apply to Fresno City College’s AA journalism program and other opportunities at the college
