Tyler Maxwell, one of the few council members who is also a renter, pointed to the council’s efforts to help tenants, like the Eviction Protection Program – which he co-authored and fought to include in this year’s budget – or his Tenant Relocation Assistance Program, which requires landlords to assist with the expense of relocating tenants during renovations on penalty of fines.

June 27 — Fresno Housing Authority Joint Board of Commissioners

Documented by Anthony Corda

What happened: At their Tuesday meeting, Fresno Housing Authority Commissioners received an update on the Housing Choice Voucher Program interest list, which opened on June 15 for the first time since 2019.

Chief of Housing Voucher Programs and Initiatives Brandy Woodard said that more than 18,765 applications had been received for the interest list as of June 21.

The interest list for the program, formerly known as Section 8, will remain open through July 14 at 5 p.m. The program is funded by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and administered by local public housing agencies

Woodard said that assistance is available in the lobby of Fresno Housing at 1331 Fulton St., and they have assisted more than 1,000 applicants in person.

Those interested may also apply online, and the housing agency has various computer labs available for use. One of the labs is located at 709 W. California Ave. in Fresno.

And also: A closed-session property negotiation was noted on the agenda for 4.68 acres in Fresno near Highway 99 and Olive Avenue at 1823 W. Hedges Ave.

The vacant land, zoned for neighborhood mixed use, is listed on Zillow for $1.17 million.

Up next: Commissioners are scheduled to meet again on July 25. At that meeting the commissioners will review the agency’s annual plan, which will be released to the public on July 28.
