Despite the item not appearing on the public agenda, the Parlier City Council approved amending the Parks and Recreation budget to include a three-year state grant of approximately $200,000 and additional funds to hire staff for events.

What happened: The Parlier City Council met on Nov. 17, 2022 and approved amending the Parks and Recreation budget. City Manager Sonia Hall announced that the city received a three-year grant of approximately $200,000 from the California Department of Parks and Recreation. It will go towards the city’s Parks and Recreation Department.

Despite the item not being on the public agenda, she also requested that funds be added to the budget along with the grant to hire additional department staff. After a long dispute among the officials and members of the public, the council approved amending the budget.

Fallen police officer remembered: Police Chief David Cerda remembered fallen officer Michael Avila, who died 42 years ago on Nov. 15, 1981. “He epitomized the true essence of what public safety symbolizes and modeled professionalism through his genuine passion to help others,” Cerda said. “His fellow officers praised him for his leadership and mentoring qualities that led to their personal growth and professional development as an officer.”
