What's at stake?

Fresnoโ€™s local ballot has had no shortage of drama either, including political in-fighting amongst county party officials on both sides of the aisle; a council candidate was arrested for a crime he did not commit and scored a rare apology from the police chief in the process. That same controversial bad arrest triggered an all-out fight between the city attorney and a councilmember that could come to a head as soon as Thursday.

Despite scattered showers and cooler weather, Fresno County voters are turning out today, citing affordability and alarm over the Trump administration’s immigration tactics as the top issues driving them to the polls.

The polls close at 8 p.m.

Here’s what some residents had to say as they dropped their ballots at the clerk’s office in downtown Fresno.

Katie Broadwayโ€”Beersย

Age: 56

Occupation: Lead counsel for Salvation Army

Katie Broadway-Beers  said that costs of living have risen too high and has impacted every aspect of daily costs in her life.

โ€œCost of living is way too high in California,โ€ Broadway-Beers said, adding โ€œIโ€™m a Democrat, but I voted Republican this time, we need a change; my kids canโ€™t buy a home.โ€

Broadway-Beers noted that she voted against any tax increases.

โ€œHopefully weโ€™ll get that three-dollar gas.โ€

Roberto Flores

Age: 58

Occupation: Vocational instructor

Roberto Flores said that high taxes and costs were also top of mind for him on Election Day. Flores also explained that he feels roads are in too much disrepair to justify any tax increases, saying theyโ€™re already high as is.

โ€œEven for my old car I’m paying $300 a year when other states charge like $70 just for the sticker,โ€ Flores said.

Flores also listed safety as one of his priorities this election season, saying he wants a community that is safe for children to be raised in.

Delia Mejia

Age: 50

Occupation: Stylist

Delia Mejia said she wants to see change in the nationโ€™s immigration enforcement, noting that families and children shouldnโ€™t be punished for not having a piece of paper proving their citizenship.

โ€œI want the Democrat to win because I know theyโ€™ll make a big difference because theyโ€™re on the side of sensible people,โ€ Mejia said.

Mejia also echoed that high costs of living have impacted every aspect of daily life, saying gas, rent and groceries are too expensive while incomes barely change.

Mejia also said that the nation needs unity and called on all people to vote, saying that voters should consider making time today to vote and have their voice be heard at the polls.
