1. Vote crunch
With the June 2 election deadline approaching and 10 vote centers open, the Fresno County clerk is urging people to avoid dropping their ballots in standard mail boxes, YourCentralValley reports.
Fresno County also plans to open 44 more vote centers this coming weekend.
This close to the deadline, Registrar James Kus says using the vote centers to drop off ballots guarantees your vote will be counted. Using the post office, at this point, wouldn’t guarantee your ballot lands in the clerk’s office on time.
2. TJ Cox heads to prison
Disgraced former U.S. Rep. TJ Cox is scheduled to report to federal prison in Lassen County today to begin his one-year sentence, ABC30 reports.
The former Democratic Party officials cut a deal with federal prosecutors last year, who dropped more than two dozen criminal charges in exchange for a guilty-plea on two felony counts of wire fraud.
“Court documents say that between 2013 and 2018, Cox created secret bank accounts where he would deposit large checks that were made out to the tax credit company he co-owned with two other people.”
3. Undocumented immigrants hit hard by Medi-Cal cuts
More than 86,000 immigrants without legal status left or were denied Medi-Cal in January and February, KVPR reports.
That data illustrates the staggering toll that Medi-Cal cuts have taken since the New Year.
The sharp decline is the largest enrollment drop for this population since California first opened Medi-Cal to all low-income residents regardless of immigration status two years ago.
