We’re excited to share that Fresnoland is hiring our first Senior Revenue Officer.
Salary range: $75,000 – $90,000, depending on experience
Location: Fresno, California
Fresnoland is a nonprofit newsroom dedicated to making policy public for the 1.5 million residents of Fresno and Madera Counties. We do this through explanatory and accountability journalism, exploring how power works and showing how people can get more civically engaged. Our reporting has won dozens of regional and statewide journalism awards, helped change policy, inspired lawsuits over public transparency, and answered hundreds of community questions.
After five years of running, we’re ready to level up our business operations, hiring our first Senior Revenue Officer. We’ve raised about $5 million since our founding in 2018 – the majority from institutional foundations. As we’ve begun to diversify our revenue portfolio, we’ve had some early wins. Our membership program has grown by more than 33% in the past year. Our initial experiments with events sponsorships have proven successful.
We’re looking for a relationships expert, a sales fiend, an ambassador – someone who loves building and nurturing relationships with our funders, donors, sponsors, partners and members – who can transform our early successes into a sustainable, diversified revenue strategy. They will work closely with Fresnoland’s Director of Operations on rev–ops and membership, the Board of Directors on an annual fundraiser and with Fresnoland’s Executive Director on development strategy, relationship management and building proposals and pitches that align with our editorial strategy.
No journalism background is required – but we hope you’ll have a solid commitment to public service and accountability journalism and be willing to explain and uphold our code of ethics with current and prospective donors, sponsors, and funders.
Job responsibilities include:
- Steward and grow Fresnoland’s $1 million annual budget
- Build and execute a strategy to significantly expand Fresnoland’s major gifts portfolio, with quarterly goals established in partnership with the executive director
- Systematically research, meet and cultivate major donors from Fresnoland’s database of over 700 contributors
- Meet weekly with current and prospective donors, sponsors, and members
- Collaborate with staff and board members to engage them in donor solicitations based on donor interests, personal relationships, expertise or other criteria
- Build and execute a strategy to expand Fresnoland’s relationship with sponsors, with quarterly goals established in partnership with the executive director
- Build Fresnoland’s presence and recognition in the community, networking and attending community events on behalf of the organization
- Work closely with Fresnoland’s Director of Operations to support Fresnoland’s membership strategy and increase member gifts
- Collaborate with the Executive Director and Director of Operations in building assets for Fresnoland’s fundraising and sponsorship strategy
- Collaborate with the leadership team in executing our donor acknowledgement strategy
- Support the executive director to manage and steward the organization’s foundation relationships
- Work closely with the Board of Directors to identify opportunities for them to participate and engage in Fresnoland’s fundraising strategy
- Support the Board of Directors’ annual fundraiser
Preferred qualifications:
- At least three years of experience in development, fundraising, or sales – with specific experience working in a relationally-focused role

- Comfortable making cold calls, donor solicitations and meeting new people
- Creative problem-solver and flexible to adapt in strategy
- Ability to self-start, make plans and strategy, and follow through on execution
- Proactive communicator who is solutions-focused
- Commitment to Fresnoland values around equity, inclusion, and fairness
