Many days at Fresnoland, we’re reporting on conflict, explaining complicated policy, or investigating how things often went wrong.

But that’s not all what we signed up for.

We wanted to also create a place to expand our imaginations about what is possible in Fresno. To learn from other cities and be inspired by them to raise the bar for our community.

And that’s why we’ve created Fresnoland Futures – a new live event series meant to bring together leaders from Fresno and other cities in dialogue to talk about how we move forward on the biggest ideas and challenges facing our city and region.

And obviously, we’ve got to start with downtown.

The state is dangling $300 million in front of our faces. We’re going on nearly a decade of enduring high-speed rail construction. We’ve been talking about downtown revitalization as long as I can remember.

Will we ever build the housing we all say we want for downtown? Will the state and federal money solve all of our problems? How can we grow downtown while making sure people can afford to live and run their businesses there?

On Tuesday, April 23 – we’re going to talk about it – and what we can learn from another Central Valley city up the 99, Sacramento.

Please join Fresnoland, in partnership with the Urban Institute, a Washington, D.C.-based think tank, at the Sun Stereo Warehouse at 736 Fulton from 5:30pm to 7:30pm. Light snacks will be provided.

Guests include:

  • Miguel Arias, Fresno City Councilmember
  • Reza Assemi, downtown developer
  • Elliott Balch, CEO, Downtown Fresno Partnership
  • Dr. Flo Cofer, public health professional, community organizer, and leading candidate for mayor of Sacramento
  • Mike McKeever, urban planning expert and former chief of staff to Sacramento Mayor Darrell Steinberg

Also, we’ll be featuring lightning talks from Fresno urban planning expert Dan Zack and Sacramento economic policy expert Darrene Hackler.

I created Fresnoland so we can make policy public for everyone.
