What's at stake:
More than $250 million in state funds will transform downtown Fresno's infrastructure over the next few years.
Last year, Gov. Gavin Newsom announced his new state budget, and with it, $250 million over three years for a plan to revitalize downtown Fresno and its infrastructure.
His announcement came after Fresno city officials lobbied the state for years for money to transform the city’s downtown, which is also the site of the first high-speed rail station in California currently under construction.
With another $43.7 million in state grants for downtown infrastructure, how should the total $293.7 million be spent? Fresnoland is seeking residents’ and workers’ perspectives on what changes they want to see downtown.
Many details have yet to be hammered out regarding the project, along with a new obstacle: Newsom announced a one year delay for the remaining $200 million funding downtown Fresno project just last week. The budget cut one of many others thanks to a projected $38 million deficit in state revenue over the next fiscal year.
How should downtown Fresno be transformed? How should funding for infrastructure be prioritized? How should elected leaders engage with residents to understand what they want?
