At a Wednesday news conference, councilmembers Garry Bredefeld and Miguel Arias called on California Attorney General Rob Bonta to investigate the nonprofit hospital\u2019s reported $25 million in executive compensation. <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

‘Absolute outrage’<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Fresno got big mad this week when it was revealed that the CEO of Valley Children\u2019s Hospital earned more than $5 million in 2021, Fresnoland\u2019s Omar Shaikh Rashad reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Councilmembers Miguel Arias and Garry Bredefeld called executive compensation at the children\u2019s hospital a \u201cdisgrace\u201d and an \u201cabsolute outrage.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Four other executives, besides CEO Todd Suntrapak, received more than $1 million in total compensation in 2021, according to hospital tax documents. The records were first published through ProPublica\u2019s Nonprofit Explorer database<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Those were hard numbers to swallow for some who\u2019ve stood on cold, busy street corners over the years, slinging damp Kid\u2019s Day newspapers to help the hospital raise money.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Especially, Arias said, after learning the hospital also helped Suntrapak purchase a home in the swanky beach town of Carmel-by-the-Sea, described as a \u201cloan for residence<\/a> as a retention incentive in lieu of other compensation.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Fresnoland examination of property records confirmed that Suntrapak bought a $6.5 million home in Carmel in 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A university professor who studies nonprofit hospitals told ABC30<\/a> that such loans for top executives aren’t unusual.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Suntrapak stayed silent this week and the hospital\u2019s official media responses amounted to a kind of exasperated shrug. Yes, he\u2019s worth it, they said. Isn’t it obvious? After all, Valley Children\u2019s Hospital is an elite hospital<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And that\u2019s true, The Fresno Bee\u2019s Marek Warszawski noted, but also not the point for anyone suddenly questioning who really benefited from all those small donations over the years\u00a0 at places like Panda Express<\/a> and Save Mart or FoodMaxx<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe can\u2019t help but connect the mental dots from our small contributions to those exorbitant salaries,\u201d Warszawski wrote.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Suntrapak\u2019s silence probably wasn\u2019t surprising for PR-types, except that he\u2019s never really been shy before.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This isn\u2019t even his first clash with Bredefeld.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During the early months of the COVID-19 pandemic, Suntrapak criticized<\/a> Bredefeld and other politicians for demanding that schools reopen in July 2020. He\u2019s spoken out on social issues<\/a>, too, like the murder of George Floyd.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s also not the first time Suntrapak has been the focus of SJV Sun, the Fresno-area website that first published his salary locally this week<\/a>. In 2021, Suntrapak weighed in on another COVID debate, this time in Clovis Unified schools, earning the website\u2019s scrutiny<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

(And credit where credit is due, if you haven\u2019t listened to the Broeske & Musson interview on KMJ<\/a>\u00a0 with the SJV Sun\u2019s Alex Tavlian, it\u2019s worth it. Tavlian \u2013 no stranger to criticism himself<\/a> \u2013 shows the hospital\u2019s Bay Area PR flack that Fresno residents are, in fact, sophisticated enough to understand that Valley Children\u2019s didn\u2019t simply hand the CEO a bag stuffed with five million $1 bills.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wednesday\u2019s news conference was also something of a two-fer for Bredefeld, who didn\u2019t miss a shot at District Attorney Lisa Smittcamp<\/a>, a trustee on one of the hospital\u2019s boards<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cShe should have known better,\u201d Bredefeld said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Smittcamp didn\u2019t respond to Fresnoland this week, but on the GOP-safe Ray Appleton show she defended Suntrapak and the salary<\/a>, while saying she didn\u2019t actually get to vote on it. She described Bredefeld\u2019s attack as politically-motivated and \u201cshameful.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bredefeld and Smittcamp feuded just last month over Bredefeld\u2019s campaign for the Fresno County Board of Supervisors, which she reportedly called \u201cdirty.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

It will be interesting to see when and where (and if) Suntrapak speaks out, to the news media or anywhere else. Maybe he\u2019ll just put his feet up and wait for the storm to pass at one of Carmel\u2019s fancy \u201cfairytale cottages<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And maybe hospital CEO salary caps won\u2019t emerge as a campaign issue in 2024, for Bredefeld or anyone else, but Fresno wouldn\u2019t be the first California city to talk about it<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

‘Shameful and disgraceful’<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

U.S. Rep. Jim Costa has failed to meet with local Palestinian, Arab and Muslim community members and advocates, who say they have been trying to speak with him for the last five months, Fresnoland\u2019s Omar Shaikh Rashad reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

CAIR Sacramento Valley\/Central California and the Palestine Liberation Group held a news conference outside Costa\u2019s downtown Fresno office, calling on him to oppose genocide \u2014 especially as political pressure has made national leaders advocate for a ceasefire in Gaza.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With Costa\u2019s voting record on Israel \u2014 which separates him from most Democrats in the U.S. House of Representatives \u2014 advocates aren\u2019t surprised he\u2019s dodged a sit-down with constituents most impacted by Israel\u2019s continued siege on the Gaza Strip.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe think it\u2019s shameful and disgraceful that Representative Costa is so far behind what we’re seeing on a national level,\u201d said Sukaina Hussain, a deputy executive director at CAIR\u2019s Sacramento Valley\/Central California office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dyer drops big downtown news during Mariposa Plaza makeover groundbreaking<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Once the central public square of downtown Fresno, Mariposa Plaza is finally getting a long-awaited makeover. City leaders broke ground on an over $4 million project to awaken the plaza on Fulton and Mariposa Streets, Fresnoland\u2019s Danielle Bergstrom reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The plaza holds a significant place in local Fresno labor history as the site of what historians say is California\u2019s fights over freedom of expression \u2013 the Fresno Free Speech Fight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During Thursday\u2019s ceremony, Mayor Jerry Dyer announced the first investments from California\u2019s $50 million down payment on a $300 million promise for downtown revitalization: plans to replace all water and sewer infrastructure in downtown Fresno by the end of 2025. He said he anticipates a contract to be awarded for the work in June.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fresno City Council votes to sue Fresno County<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

In a narrow 4-3 vote this week, the Fresno City Council moved forward with a lawsuit against Fresno County and its controversial new General Plan, Fresnoland\u2019s Gregory Weaver reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Environmental groups are expected to join the lawsuit, accusing the county of abandoning essential protection programs and handing over control of the Kings River\u2019s future to developers. At least some at City Hall fear the county\u2019s plan could inadvertently pave the way for a massive 7,000-acre development on the Kings River in the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tensions over development have been escalating between city and county politicians particularly since a 30-year tax-sharing deal expired in 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thousands of Fresno students ignoring free college money?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Despite the fanfare surrounding its launch<\/a> in 2022, the California Kids Investment and Development Savings program (CalKIDS), a state initiative to help children from low income families save money for college or a career, has been underutilized as eligible families lack awareness about its existence, EdSource\u2019s Lasherica Thornton<\/a> reported this week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Fresno Unified, only 6.64% of eligible students<\/a> have claimed their accounts \u2014 partly because the district has not publicized the program as it can and should, FUSD Trustee Andy Levine said during a March 6 board meeting<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Outside the Lines<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

An at times testy discussion Thursday at City Hall revealed that Fresno faces a potential $37 million deficit unless cuts are made<\/strong>. Attention fell on the city\u2019s hiring expansions and employee salary increases for the city\u2019s police and fire departments \u2014 which have both received at least a $50 million budget expansion since Mayor Jerry Dyer took office.
